Network localization

Some more insights on how network localizations are captured and when they are shown on the platform.

Network localizations are often used as a fall back location when no GPS, Wi-Fi or Geobeacon location is available. Network locations have very low precision and are therefore never the first choice to know the location of an asset.

Although often network locations are shown when looking into the device messages of the tracker, this doesn't mean they are shown on user interface level, being in the asset journey, asset locations or asset status page (showing the current location of the tracker).

For most users, looking into the device messages is not needed. This is rather a debugging tool or a view for people who want to dive into the technical details of our location technologies.

A network location is only accepted in the cloud and shown on the platform if:

  • no more precise location (GPS, Wi-Fi, BLE) is available
  • if the current location of the tracker is more then 200 km away from the network location
  • if the current location of the tracker is a network location, a new network location always wins.

For network locations captured over the Sigfox network there are some other peculiarities.
